After the incredible
worlwide success of Nathan Haines debut Chilli Funk
album ‘sound Travels’ the music industry,
clubland and all at Chilli Funk’s hq waited
with extreme eagerness and baited breathe for the
follow-up.
so now after months of hardwork and slaving away in
the studio with talented producer, writer DJ &
allround good guy mr phil asher - we are extremely
proud to unveil for your listening pleasure - nathans
latest masterpeice ‘squire for hire’.
It’s a natural progression from ‘sounds
travels’
And features some of the best musicians, singers and
musical performers on the planet.
You may already be familiar with
the title track, ‘Squire for Hire’ released
as a single taster for this quality maxi and featuring
a true jazz legend -the incredible voice of all things
soulful & more ……… miss Marlena
Shaw.
Nathan’s love of Steely Dan is highlighted here
for his superb cover of ‘fm’ featuring
the haunting, yet attractive vocals of d2 and some
incredible guitar of Carl Orr.
His dream of working with his father,
world renowned jazz bass player Kevin Haines, is finally
realised in ‘nothing new’ an amazingly
simple song - lyrics penned by Phil Asher and sung
with force by Shelley Nelson.
‘oblivion’ is an immense
journey for Nathan, deep, dark and very, very personal.
This also features the amazing Chix with Stix on strings,
percussion from Karl Vanden Bossche and the haunting
horns of scott Bayliss & Barnaby Dickinson who
also appear on ‘right by your side’
An incredible club hit worldwide, vocalised by the
mighty Vanessa Freeman and Marcus Begg with the west
london rhythm section of Mike Patto on keys, Neville
‘level’ Malcolm - bass and the evergreen
Chris Franck on guitar & kalimba. The perfect
soulful dance record-we like to think so.
the multi-talented Mike Patto gets
together with Phil and Nathan for ‘folk jazz’,
an almost world beat sort of a tune, that gets right
inside your head and refuses to let go check the natural
drumming from Daniel Cosby, the sitar of Boo Scher,
those Chix with Stix on strings and again Kevin Haines
on bass with Jim Lampi’s Chapman stick adding
a further dimension. Mike also lends a hand on ‘nothing
new’ and the quirky titled ‘doot dude’,
featuring the wonderful lyrics and spoken word of
Lyric L and some gorgeous strings recorded by Tom
Davidson at north london’s livingston studios.
‘springtime rain’ features the deep, smooth
voice of rich medina, add to that the playing of Simon
Colam’s acoustic piano and vintage wurlitzer
and you have another haunting performance that just
reaches. ……oh yes! Rich Medina also voices
his much revered opinion on ‘let it go’
another special song with a poinant message in the
music.
Whilst you’re about it check
out the vocal prowness of Guida de Palma on ‘o
misterio’, the lady’s vocals are really
something else -this cut also has Mark De Clive Lowe
on bass-an incredible talent whose time is just around
the corner
We cannot praise this Nathan Haines
album enough and the wait, we’re sure you’ll
agree, has definitely been worth it.
‘squire for hire’ reaches beyond all expectations
and shows that Nathan Haines music has matured to
an incredibly high level and his partnership with
Phil Asher is a match made in heaven. Add to that
the incredible musicianship, vocals and production
and the end result is a amazing album for music lovers
worldwide, where ‘quality’ is definitely
the key……………..oh yes
you funky people it really doesn’t get much
better than this!
